Dental Cleanings in Salem
Routine cleanings are one of the most important habits for protecting your smile, but different patients may need different types of cleanings depending on their oral health needs. At Nob Hill Dental, we take the time to figure out what your gums and teeth need, then clean accordingly, instead of giving everyone the same quick polish.
Why Routine Cleanings Matter?
Brushing and flossing remove plaque, but they can't reach everywhere. Over time, plaque hardens into calculus (tartar) along and below the gumline, where a toothbrush can't reach it. Left in place, that buildup irritates the gums and can eventually damage the bone that supports your teeth. We remove it before it becomes a bigger problem and use every cleaning as a regular checkpoint to catch small issues while they're still small.
Routine cleanings are also one of the most cost-effective things you can do for your health. Preventing gum disease and cavities is far simpler and far less expensive than treating them once they've progressed.
What to Expect at Your Cleaning?
We schedule hygiene appointments for a full 60 minutes, so there's real time for careful work and an honest conversation, not a rushed visit squeezed between other patients.
The Exam
Before any cleaning begins, Dr. Alexander Zuk or your hygienist will check your gum tissue, look for signs of decay or wear, and take any needed X-rays. This tells us what type of cleaning is appropriate and whether anything else deserves attention.
The Cleaning
Using hand instruments and ultrasonic tools, your hygienist carefully removes plaque and calculus from above and below the gumline, then polishes your teeth. If you have any sensitive spots, tell us, and we will adjust our approach so the visit stays comfortable.
Personalized Recommendations
We'll walk you through what we saw, answer your questions, and, if needed, talk through options, never with pressure, and never as a production line. Our goal is for you to leave understanding exactly where your oral health stands.
Types of Cleanings We Offer
Your hygienist and Dr. Alexander Zuk will always tell you plainly which type of cleaning your mouth needs and why.
Routine (Preventive) Cleanings
Also called a prophylaxis, this is the standard cleaning recommended for patients with generally healthy gums. It removes surface plaque and tartar and keeps small issues from becoming larger ones.
Deep Cleanings (Scaling and Root Planing)
If plaque and tartar have built up below the gumline and started to affect the surrounding bone, a routine cleaning isn't enough to restore your gum health. We remove buildup from the tooth root itself and smooth the root surface so gum tissue can reattach and heal. Learn more about how we diagnose and treat gum disease.
How Often Should You Get a Cleaning?
Most patients do well with a cleaning every six months. If you have a history of gum disease, heavier tartar buildup, or certain health conditions, we may recommend visits every three to four months instead. We'll set the right interval for you based on what we actually see at your exam, not a one-size-fits-all schedule.
Cleanings, Insurance, and Membership
Routine cleanings are typically covered, in part or in full, by most dental insurance plans. If you don't have dental insurance, our in-house membership plan includes two cleanings and two exams per year, along with a 20% discount on additional treatment, for one predictable annual fee.
